URED 6055-17659 Multicultural Ed and Social Justice – 2 credits

Course Expectations:

Participant are expected to attend each of the nine workshops:
  • Examining Celebrations and Holidays in Schools Within a Framework of Power and Privilege, September 17, 2008
  • The Karen Community in Minnesota, October 21, 2008
  • American Indian Boarding Schools:  History and Legacy, November 19, 2008
  • Social Justice and the Arts, December 9, 2008
  • Math and Social Justice, January 21, 2009
  • African American Issues in Education, February 17, 2009
  • Engaging Families of Color, March 18, 2009
  • Moving Towards a Social Justice Education Framework, April 14, 2009
  • Scandinavian Culture, May 20, 2008

Arrangements can be made to substitute one of the films for one of the classes in the event that one of the workshops is missed.

Each student will be required to submit a journal entry after each session reflecting on the workshop and how it impacts their teaching (how they might use it in their classroom or how it has given them new insight in to their students or the curriculum).  Journal entries should be e-mailed within one week of the session to jennifer.eisele@spps.org.

The criteria for evaluating the journal entry will be as follows:
A    Each of the nine journal entries submitted meets all of the following         criteria:  Reflects on the workshop and how it impacts their teaching (how they might use it in their classroom or how it has given them new insight in to their students or the curriculum) and the writing is clear, well organized, and free of grammatical and spelling errors, submitted on time.

B    Eight journal entries submitted.

C    Seven journal entries submitted.

Participants are expected to attend six of the nine film nights:
  • September 23, 2008 -  Freedom Writers
  • October 29, 2008  -  Rain in A Dry Land
  • November 25, 2008 – In Whose Honor/Devil’s Tower
  • December 17,2008 -  Persepolis
  • January 27, 2009 -  Flatland
  • February 25, 2009 – Boys of Baraka
  • March 24, 2009 – Children of Heaven
  • April 22, 2009 – Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible
  • May 26, 2009 – Lone Star ( R)

Registration for 2008-09 MRC Staff Development for Graduate Credit:

Complete the registration form at the bottom of this page and mail or fax to Hamline University.  You may register for either course up until 12/08.
